Founded on August 29, 1926, ACF Fiorentina—nicknamed “La Viola” (the “Purple”)—is an iconic team in Serie A, displaying their flair at the scenic Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence.
Fiorentina’s primary rivalry is with Juventus. The match between Fiorentina and Empoli (currently, the only other Tuscan squad in Serie A) is called the Tuscan Derby. When La Viola plays Bologna, the city on the other side of the Tuscan-Emilian ridge of the Apennines, it is called the Derby dell’Appennino.
Stadio Artemio Franchi, an influential work of engineer and architect Pier Luigi Nervi, opened in 1931 and is a classic example of 1930s Italian architecture. Its “Maratona Tower” is one of the most recognizable elements of any football stadium in Italy.
